Sherrie Palmieri
DNP, MBA, RN, CNE, NPD-BC
Hello, my name is Sherrie, pronounced Cherie, and I am a registered nurse with over 30 years of experience in the nursing profession. While my nursing journey has allowed me to practice in many specialty areas, including rehabilitation nursing and critical care nursing, my long-term passion remains senior care (gerontology) and nursing education to prepare our next generation of nurses!
I am a first-generation college graduate, and you may see from my credentials that I also have a passion for life-long learning! My father instilled this passion for learning, and I am forever grateful. He was a disabled veteran and often brought my sister and me to the library when he was attending classes at the local community college. My love of reading and learning started there.
During my nursing journey, I found my passion for working with the elderly and have worked in skilled rehabilitation facilities, long-term care, and home health.
My experience in senior care started as a staff nurse in a skilled nursing facility to serving as the Director of Nursing for a 500-bed nursing facility, Nursing Home Administrator, and culminated in owning a Home Care agency for the elderly.
Additionally, I served as the subject matter expert and co-authored the American Nurses Association (ANA) Gerontological Nurse Certification Review Course in 2018.
During my nursing journey, it became very clear how lifestyle choices impacted the health of the patients and clients we cared for, regardless of the setting.
Unfortunately, I also learned this through my own personal journey. In 2009, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was a single parent, working 50-plus hours a week, and not dedicating enough time to myself for exercise, rest, and sleep. I was also Vitamin D deficient, not enough sunshine!
After navigating extensive treatment with surgeries and chemotherapy (surrounded by amazing colleagues and friends), I knew I needed change.
I made the commitment to myself that I needed to commit time to maintain a healthier lifestyle with a work-life balance. My daughter was eight at the time and I was motivated. I reduced my work hours, purchased a treadmill (outdoor walking when the weather is good), took up a low-carb diet, and bought a timeshare to ensure I took vacations. I wanted to be a role model for my daughter.
When my daughter left for college, I relocated back to Arizona as I missed the year-round sunshine and outdoor lifestyle.
My fitness routine includes stretching for flexibility, yoga, walking (outdoors preferably), hiking, and kayaking. I am also learning pickleball, which is very fun!
For social connections, I joined a Women’s Book Club and the members love outdoor adventures as much as me, so are exploring everything Arizona offers!
These experiences, both professional and personal, have led me to create Healthy Living Essentials to share some of what I have learned to support others make lifestyle choices that will support their health and well-being! I look forward to our journey together!
